The Weight of Blood by Tiffany D. Jackson

Genre: Horror

Synopsis: This retelling of Stephen King’s Carrie is mashed up with inspiration from the true story of a school in Georgia that did not hold its first integrated prom until 2013!

Maddy lives an extremely sheltered life brought up by her single father who wants to live in an idealized 1950s world. Her outdated beliefs and style make her the subject of ruthless bullying and ridicule at her modern high school.

The circumstances that unfold after Maddy’s biggest secret is revealed lead to well-intended but horrendous events that disrupt an entire community.

Many TWs: n-word, abuse, neglect, police violence, and more.

I liked this book because...

Author Tiffany D. Jackson wrote in the novel’s dedication that this was the book she always wanted to read as a young horror fan, and she delivered. The Weight of Blood has dynamic characters with awful foils, surprising twists (even for people who have read or watched Carrie), action, romance, and horrors ranging from societal to the paranormal.
