A Victorious Melody - Gabriela Locke

The North Andover High School choirs recently put their voices to the test, traveling with their director, Mrs. Durkin, to Westborough High School and Boston for chorus competitions with other school choirs. Hearing positive accolades, I interviewed concert choir member Benitez Makuta to gain further knowledge. Benitez is a very talented singer as well as an exemplary student. Benitez has loved singing from songs in the shower to full year chorus class at North Andover Middle School.

Benitez expressed her emotions on how the competitions turned out. She told me, “I see the strength of our choir through our hard work and dedication.”

The group practices after school from 5:30 p.m. to 7:15 p.m. in addition to participating in competitions on the weekends. The performances were special to the seniors because the occasions marked their last competitions at NAHS. For a senior like Georgette Makuta, Benitez’s older sister, the experience was a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity.

Georgette introduced Benitez to the choir and the sisters enjoy seeing each other excel and have fun, especially with each other. To make this competition even more special, they sang their hearts out to beautiful songs like “Sililiza,” “O Love,” and “Way Over In Beulah Lan’.”

The NAHS choirs were up to the challenge as members won first place, overall, at the Boston competition! As a result of this success, they will compete next year in Nashville, Tenn.

The NAHS choir consists of a great group of people who deserve this special win. Please congratulate these choir members when you see them!
