Songs from the Heart - Chloe Kim

Last month, North Andover High School accomplished great feats at the Massachusetts Instrumental and Choral Conductors Association (MICCA) Chorus Competition. The Treble and Concert Choirs earned silver medals, and the Scarlet and Black Singers earned a gold medal. This success led the way to further achievements at the WorldStrides Competition in Boston.

The North Andover Concert Choir, an all-inclusive choir, performed three pieces at MICCA, including “Sililiza (Hear Me),” a composition with a fusion of percussion from a shaker and a drum, a catchy rhythm, and sounds from African, American, and Latin cultures. This piece opened the competition. Afterwards, the choir sang “O Love,'' a piece that combines a beautiful melody with hauntingly beautiful notes that soar into the air with a message of hope. The final selection,“Way Over in Beulah Lan’,” was a spiritual composition filled with vivid imagery and contrasting dynamics.

Taking feedback from the judges at MICCA, the concert choir made adjustments to its technique and performance ahead of the WorldStrides Competition.

Countless hours of rehearsals and passion for music entwined three choirs together as one. The Treble and Concert Choirs and Scarlet and Black Singers took major steps in their final choral competitions. The choirs all hoped for not only medals but validation of their hard work and dedication towards music. With a shared goal to continue the legacy of the North Andover Choral Department’s success in state competitions, these three choirs performed for themselves as well as others observing their technicality and their ability to follow the great singers before them.
