Climate change has been a subject that has dominated the news, even more so in recent years. Greenhouse gases, fossil fuels, extinction, natural disasters..these are all keywords associated with this issue affecting the world in which we and future generations will be living. If you take a closer look, none of these words have positive connotations. However, climate change discussions are being led by notable people, from the famous renowned English primatologist Jane Goodall to Greta Thunberg who is leading the charge for the youth’s voice of this generation.
Recently, the world leaders of over 120 countries were brought together in a meeting called Conference of the Parties 26 (COP 26). COP 26 is a part of the United Nations Climate Change Conference that the UN hosts in order to propose solutions and understand our current situation with the climate. At this meeting, there were several proposed plans that could improve our planet’s future. They include a “methane plan in which over 100 nations agreed to cut carbon emissions and pledge to halt and reverse deforestation by 2030 (the date to secure the planet’s future before irreversible effects take hold of us) and over 40 countries shifting away from coal, which is one of the biggest generators of carbon dioxide emissions” (Quiñones).
As we see the planet suffer more through deforestation and the loss of amazing wildlife species, the presence of climate change is making itself more apparent to us everyday. Natural disasters disrupting the livelihoods of people all over the world and accounting for thousands of deaths will become a regular occurrence in this generation without proper measures to curb the warming of the Earth. Climate change is real. Climate change is visible. Climate change is backed with scientific data. Acknowledging this global issue is only the start to save our planet and ourselves along with it.
