Updated: Nov 1, 2022

International Women’s Day, now celebrated on March 8, has been recognized by the United Nations (UN) since 1977. According to the UN, the first observance was actually on Feb. 28, 1909 when the Socialist Party of America honored a 1908 strike by garment workers in New York City.

While International Women’s Day began as recognition of the protests of labor movements at the turn of the twentieth century, the day has evolved into an inspiration for women’s rights.

According to payscale.com, 113 years later women are still 18% behind men in their annual salary. This day commemorates and celebrates women in all the world, with no regard to color, race, or age, demonstrating the importance of the women around the world.
